Practical Microbial Assessment
Forget complicated spreadsheets and biomass calculations. In this Masterclass, you’ll learn a fast and effective scoring method to assess your soil's microbial balance—perfect for making real-time decisions in the garden. You’ll even get to watch our lab expert perform a live scoring demonstration as part of your training.
To keep things simple and actionable, we’ve designed this course for easy understanding and immediate application. Plus, all students gain access to a private online forum to connect with peers and ask questions between classes. Each session also includes a dedicated Q&A to ensure you get the support you need and live, monthly scoping sessions.
Let's Dig Into the Details
There are 5 main lessons. You will have instant access to the training videos upon purchase. The live masterclass will be held twice a year in summer and fall. You will have monthly live scoping sessions & Q&A with your mentor upon purchase of the class to get you started. The live monthly sessions will run from February to November.
This class is now instant access and go at your own pace. The live class in the summer and fall of 2025 will meet for 5 weeks in total.
The live Q&A's are at the end of each week's lessons and are audio recorded for your review later on. Additionally, you will have monthly scoping & Q&A sessions you can attend or watch the recording later. These monthly sessions will run from February through November.
This is a lifetime membership to this class and all future classes. You will be able to join any class now and in the future to refresh or join the monthly Q&A and ask questions. We also have our online forum for any questions you may have in between the live classes and monthly scoping Q&A's.
We believe live sessions are important, and we also know that you just need to go at your own pace with something like this. Practice makes perfect, as they say, so get all the practice that you can. This is also the reason we have changed the format of this particular masterclass, so you have monthly access to live information and can also get started when it suits you.
Absolutely! Learning to grow with microbes is all about pattern recognition and learning how to read that pattern. This class will show you how to read your soil through the different microbes you find and the balance of each. We learn the technique and then let the microbes lead the way.
Yes, we do ship the lab kit internationally. We just ask that you cover the shipment of the kit for those international students. Sometimes there are delays in getting international shipments out due to the nature of customs.
No, you do not have to have a camera set-up for your microscope, though you will be limited in your communication when it comes to identifying organisms under the microscope. To gain the most from the class, we do suggest a camera set-up. When you sign up, you will receive a list of equipment that we recommend, both for microscopes and for camera set-up.

"Sara’s microscope masterclass has unlocked a whole world that I knew existed but didn’t know how to quantify or evaluate. This class is a great option for those who want a functional understanding of how to track biological communities in the soil and make informed decisions about how cultivation techniques are impacting plant and soil health. Sara’s teaching style is both professional and approachable and her desire to help others learn is indisputable. Don’t let her gentle demeanor fool you - Sara Skamnes is a badass whose skill and ability should not be underestimated! I have huge gratitude and respect for Sara, both for her willingness to share her knowledge in the classroom and beyond, and for the values she embodies in the world at large. I am thrilled to have her as an invaluable resource as I continue my journey into microscopy, regenerative practices, and understanding biological communities.
By taking Scott and Sara’s classes I have been able to access not only valuable and immediately applicable information, but a community of like-minded people who genuinely want to help each other. Having access to the Crescive forums has been an incredible resource and I’m elated to be a part of the Crescive family. Scott and Sara have quickly become indispensable mentors and allies in my living soil journey, for which I am extremely grateful. "- Lindsay Dawson

"I had been consulting with Crescive for a few months before Sara’s microscopy class was announced, and I decided to sign up on a whim. Boy am I glad I did. This class turned out to be one of the most comprehensive, concise, and valuable courses I’ve ever taken.
In this class you will learn the fundamentals of soil microbiology, along with the proper way to sample your soil and use the microscope itself, and you will be provided with the tools necessary to do so. Sara does an incredible job of clearly explaining what we’re looking at under the mic, what each of the various microorganisms do, and the crucial roles they play in the system.
You will also learn a qualitative quick-scoring method used to accurately assess the health of your soil microbiology, without needing to spend hours under the mic. This has been an absolute lifesaver for someone who does not have a lot of free time, but really needs to know what’s going on under the hood. This knowledge is absolutely critical to maintaining a thriving living soil system under any setting, and I would not be where I am today without having taken this course.
Whether you’re brand new to the subject, or a veteran SFW student looking to polish your skills, I guarantee this class will be of incredible benefit. Thank you so much Sara and the Crescive team!! "- Zuriah Shara
